Bob Toth
Of Counsel
Bob Toth has been providing Of Counsel services to the attorneys and clients of the Fiduciary Law Center (previously the Retirement Law Group) for over a decade, also being the Principal of the Law Offices of Robert J. Toth Jr., LLC. His practice focuses on the “infrastructure” supporting employer retirement plans, including the design, administration, and distribution of financial products and services for those plans. It combines elements of ERISA, tax law, insurance law, securities law, and investment law for 401(a), 403(b), and 457 plans. Bob’s experience includes supporting a broad base of innovative products and programs nationally and worldwide, including the design of lifetime income programs for defined contribution plans; multiple employer plans and pooled employer plans; integrating internationally based U.S. retirement plans; as well as a wide swath of products and platforms for 403(b) and 401(a) plans. He has particular expertise in dealing with annuity products for employer-based retirement plans.
Prior to opening Toth Law in 2009, Bob was a partner at Baker and Daniels (now Faegre Drinker Biddle) and spent 17 years in the legal division of Lincoln Financial Group, where he was Associate General Counsel managing the legal affairs of LFG’s employer market division. Prior to joining LFG, Bob was a Senior Attorney at Kellogg Company in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he provided in-house counsel for all benefit law issues related to the company.
Licensed to practice in Indiana and Michigan, Bob has been a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel since 2007. He has been long engaged in leadership positions in the retirement industry throughout his career, including with the American Bar Association, American Retirement Association/ASPPA/NTSA, National and Great Lakes IRS TE/GE Councils, the American Council of Life Insurers, and the American Benefits Council.
He is widely published on a number of challenging technical issues confronting the retirement markets, and maintains a blog at the businessofbenefits.com. He is an avid chess player and bread baker (his own sourdough starter is dated April 11, 2002), and enjoys full life with his wife, Conni, and their family.
